The Bookmobile, part of the Arrowhead Library System, stops at the parking lot in near the Pequaywan Inn on Mondays once a month, from 2:30 to 3 p.m. For the schedule, check www.arrowhead.lib.mn.us or call 1-800-257-1442.

 WoodChix (formerly Valley Homemakers) meet regularly from May to December. Meeting are usually held the fourth Thursday of the month. The group holds social events and does a variety of community service events, such as providing baked goods during Pequaywan Fire Department Pancake Breakfast and donating sales to the Fire Department; fundraising for various charitable organizations in the area; donating quilts, throw blankets, mittens, hats, socks, toiletries and other personal hygiene products to the needy; and the spring cleaning at the Lake Chapel. Pequaywan Garden Club meets monthly to discuss gardening — both flowers and vegetables. Each meeting features a program related to gardening. Members share seeds, roots, plants and ideas. Contact: Phyllis Mead, 848-2051

Tuesday Lunch: The first Tuesday of the month area folks meet at the Pequaywan Inn for lunch to socialize. From May to October, they also meet the third Tuesday of the month and that is a potluck lunch.

Volunteer Fire Department. We are fortunate to have a well staffed volunteer fire department and first responders. The annual Pancake Breakfast, held around the Fourth of July, is the major fund raiser for the department.

Residents who are planning large-scale burning of brush or other material should contact the department to inform it of the time and location. Contact: Dale Brooks, Fire Chief, 848-2056. Mobile – 393-6079.

Lakeside Chapel. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, church services are held at 10 a.m. Sunday mornings at the Lakeside Chapel, 8893 Pequaywan Lake Road. Contact: Jeff Tyllia, 728-6514.

NorthStar Recycling: Saturdays, 9 a.m. to Noon, North Star Fire Hall on Hwy. #44. Accepts cans, glass, plastic, paper, cereal boxes, and cardboard. County Road 44.

Brimson Farmers Market. Every Saturday, Independence Day (July)  through Labor Day (September) at Hugo’s Bar at 1898 Hwy 44, Brimson, 9 am to noon, with a one-day special market on Saturday before Memorial Day (May). Local arts  and crafts, good rummage, fresh produce, baked goods, socks, knife sharpening, books and more.
